Meet Our Managers

Brad Wolfe
"I was born and raised in Ft. Collins, Colorado. I first came to Boulder in 1995 to attend school at the University of Colorado in Boulder. In the fall of 1999, I graduated from the school of business with a degree in Marketing and an emphasis in entrepreneurship. I founded Organo-Lawn in September of 1997 and worked by myself for the majority of the 1998 season. With the help of many horticultural professionals I am a licensed pesticide applicator and qualified supervisor in the State of Colorado.

Recently we have become “greener” by making renewable fuels including bio diesel and waste vegetable oil. I have been a guest speaker at many alternatives to pesticide workshops and at the 2001 alternatives to traditional pesticides convention held at the University of Colorado. I have helped create and manage the development of Organo-Lawn products like Smarter Weed Control, Synergy, Pax Terra Plus, and Natures Weed Control. My favorite part of starting a company like Organo-Lawn is when I can tell customers that yes it is fine to let their dog go play on the lawn.

Betsey Seymour
After living in Kansas and coaching college basketball for a number of years, my husband and I moved to the Boulder area. While living in Louisville for a number of years my husband received a job near his home town of Glenwood Springs. We now enjoy living in Silt, CO where we have the opportunity to enjoy the beauty of the Western slope and enjoy all the outdoor activities that this area has to offer. In the winter months while Organo-Lawn is less busy I am the JV coach with the Glenwood Springs Girls Basketball program.

In 2005 I came to work for Organo-Lawn as the office manager and now work from my home office in Silt. I enjoy working for a company that is committed to making an environmental change in Colorado. I also am committed to providing accurate information and great customer service. I love the fact that we provide a service that allows the homeowner to have a little sanctuary of their own, their back yard.

Pat Abramson
I grew up in the forests of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Searching for snow I moved to the mountains of summit county of Colorado in 1990. I spent the next 13 years as a professional snowboarder traveling the world including, Argentina, Canada, Alaska, and Europe. In 2002, I directed Windell's Snowboard camp at Mt. Hood Oregon. In 2003, I moved to Boulder Colorado to accept the position of head coach of snowboarding at the University of Colorado. In the spring of 2006 I joined the Organo-Lawn team and the rest is history. I love the environmental aspect of Organo-Lawn and have converted a diesel van so it runs on vegetable oil as well.

Why Synthetic Fertilizers Are Bad

Synthetic fertilizers are derived from fast release nitrogen or synthetic sources usually derived from petroleum products. The nitrogen in fast release fertilizers is readily available to the plant when it comes in contact with water. There are many down flaws with this rapid availability. First, if a freshly synthetically fertilized lawn is watered or rained on to the point of runoff a lot of the nutrients are washed away from the lawn and down the gutter often collection in lakes and ponds. Secondly, nitrogen is a scarce resource for a plant and the natural reaction to excessive nitrogen by the plant is to uptake as much nitrogen as possible even in excess. This excessive uptake of nitrogen causes the plant to stop up-taking other vital nutrients like potassium, phosphorus, calcium, iron, etc. Therefore, the plant often grows excessively fast causing what is called "surge growth." This excessive growth is unhealthy for the plant and often causes tissue and root burning and decreases the plants tolerance to disease and drought resistance.

Most synthetic fertilizers are comprised of fast release nitrogen source that can green up a lawn very quickly but the color fades almost as quickly as it developed. To sustain a green lawn with synthetic fertilizers frequent applications of fertilizer are required. Synthetic fertilizer applications feed from the top of the soil and at short intervals therefore, promoting a shallow and weak root structure. Also, no microorganism activity is promoted in the soil because there is no organic matter in synthetic fertilizers. With consistent use of synthetic fertilizers without organic matter, over time the turf will require more water and more fertilizer to obtain the deep green color most people are desiring.

Why Our Fertilizers Are Better

Organo-Lawn’s organic fertilizers are derived from renewable plant based products that stimulate deep and strong root development. Many of the ingredients like humate, corn gluten meal, and yucca extract are edible and are considered non-hazardous to pets, people, and beneficial plants (trees, flowers, and vegetables). The nitrogen in organic fertilizers is only available to plants after it has been broken down by microorganism activity. The microorganisms are most active during moderate temperatures like in the spring and the fall therefore releasing more nitrogen faster during the months that plant life needs nitrogen the most. During hot temperatures in the summer and cold temperatures in the winter the microorganism activity is minimal and therefore, the availability of nitrogen is less abundant therefore,
naturally protecting the plant life from excessive nitrogen exposure during stressful heat or extreme cold. The symbiotic relationship between microorganisms and organic fertilizers is marvelous because it creates a naturally controlled release nitrogen source, as a result, the plant will uptake the nitrogen at a healthy and controlled rate. The slower uptake of nutrients develops stronger tissue growth and a deep dark green foliage. Other benefits of organic fertilizers and healthy microorganism activity include the synergistic effects of naturally balancing soil pH; the boosting of potash and iron levels, increasing plant root density, reducing problematic fungus activity, and fostering the decomposition of thatch. Finally, certain Organo-Lawn products like humate help release beneficial nutrients that currently exist in the soils but are not available for uptake by the plants life. Compared to synthetic fertilizers the results derived from organic fertilizers are superior and healthier for plant life over the long term.
