How does corn gluten meal work?

Corn gluten meal prevents weed seeds from germinating properly. Shortly after weeds germinate, the young weeds send out secondary feeder roots that draw vital nutrients from the soil. The corn gluten meal, which is a by-product of corn syrup production, damages the feeder roots of many plants germinating from seed including weeds like dandelions, crabgrass, thistle, clover, plantain, lamb's ears, etc. The result is that many of the weeds will germinate, but because the corn gluten meal damages the weed's secondary feeder root, they will not develop into an adult weed.

Synergy, an all organic pre-emergent weed control, is registered by the Colorado Department of Agriculture and we recommend it for application on lawns in the Boulder and Fort Collins area.
